How many will be in the sessions?
These sessions will be open to five women. We have always ensured that our session sizes are small to ensure everyone attending gets the attention and support necessary to progress at their own individual pace.
I’ve just completed a 5 week improver course, I was keen to learn more about wave reading, positioning, paddling and foundational knowledge. It was a great and supportive group. I have learnt a ton in the past 5 weeks, Sal delivers in such a personal way - carefully helping and guiding everyone with bespoke advice. I feel all of the things I signed up to work on have improved alongside my confidence - I'm now going out back solo equipped with knowledge around safety/getting through the white water/etiquette etc. Will definitely be booking onto another course in the future. I don't think I would have continued surfing if it wasn't for Yonder (I also did a beginner course in 2022) as it can be such an intimidating and overwhelming sport. Thanks for guiding me through it Sal - see you in the water! Mandy 🏄♀️

What level of surfing do you need to be?
In order to get the most out of these clubs some surf experience is necessary; the ability to paddle for, catch and pop up on white water waves is required. Click here for our ability levels.
Our Improver clubs are for those that have had lessons before and have a certain level of confidence in the water with a surfboard. These clubs are for those that are wanting to explore heading out back and learning the techniques needed to do this. We will always cover the basics of positioning on a board and getting to your feet but these sessions require a level of confidence laying on a board and feeling happy paddling through white water.
Where possible we will focus on how to catch green waves, how to position yourself on the wave and ride in trim. We look at the different types of waves, understanding and reading waves, ocean safety, surf etiquette, forecasting, building ocean confidence in the water and how to paddle out back (surf depending) These clubs will be a great opportunity to ask as many questions as possible, meet like minded women and build confidence and skills.
Our aim is to help you become a more independent and confident surfer so a chance to ask all the questions, try a range of boards in a safe and supportive environment with like minded women.
Each surfer is always individually supported in their surf journey. Just message me (Sal) if you’re not sure.
There is the possibility of a skate session if the conditions would make it more beneficial one week, we will play that by ear and bring Tom in as our certified skateboard coach. We have all the equipment for this and it has proved highly popular and beneficial to participants surfing as well as being a lot of fun!
The unpredictable nature of surf:
Due to the very nature of unpredictable conditions we may not always have swell so will run paddle technique sessions if safe to do so. If we have dangerous conditions we may instead do a land based theory sessions on surf concept, ocean safety or surf forecasting. There is also the option to skate (see above.) Please be advised that the conditions will not always be perfect but we will need them to be safe. These sessions are intended to ‘go out whatever the conditions,' a way of understanding our sea better which is often the reality of the North Sea but if we have unfavourable winds I may also try and rearrange for another date during that week or we may run a surf forecasting session instead. Flat sessions are recognised as important in our surf journey as it is often during these sessions that we grasp board control and paddle techniques.
These sessions are aimed at building friendships and confidence and providing a more regular option for those not able to be as adaptable due to work/family/travel commitments. Women who have attended these sessions have formed friendships and gained skills that have helped them to become confident and independent surfers and water users.
Sally is a qualified ASI Level 2 Instructor and SLSGB LifeGuard with years of experience surfing in the North Sea, this is a great opportunity to learn to surf with a passionate and experienced instructor.
Important disclaimer - 50% refund of the entire club sessions will only be issued if the attendee informs Yonder well in advance that they are unable to attend. Yonder will require at least fourteen days notice so that they can find a replacement. There is no option to obtain refunds if the attendee cancels on individual sessions as it is very hard to find replacements that can slot into an existing course and that is not the intention of these group sessions.
*In the highly unlikely event we have consecutive weeks of unsafe conditions, we will keep one week as a buffer to rearrange a session as a group. With this group we may also look at alternative beaches for at least one session. This is likely only to be as far as Blyth Beach.
