Spring Madre 2025 - A Surf Club for Mothers - 5 weeks on Tuesdays @ 9.30am
For mothers that have never tried and those that have struggled to get back in the sea.
Location: Tynemouth Longsands
Dates: March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, April 1st
Time: 9.30 - 11.15
What do we provide? We provide everything you need to surf and build ocean confidence.
We have high quality boards, women’s wetsuits, boots, gloves & hoods if needed! Women will be provided with a wetsuit (boots/gloves etc) at the beginning of the week and will take these home ready for the following day.
Our range of boards to borrow from include perfect beginner boards to high quality soft tops.
Small group size:
We have always ensured that our session sizes are small to ensure everyone attending gets the attention and support necessary to progress at their own individual pace. These small groups also help to build lasting relationships.
Who are they for?
This is a club designed for mothers specifically. The aim is to give the opportunity to mothers that have never tried surfing or those that have been struggling to get in since having children. We have designed this course to help take that first step, to help break down the potential barriers as much as we can and to provide a supportive and slow paced space that will help nurture a love and understanding of the sea, that can be built up and continued into the future.
As a mother myself, I know and recognise how hard it can be to find time for yourself, especially to start something new and commit time and energy outside of your family. I am also a strong believer that this time and energy spent is paramount for our own mental health and the benefits we feel are reflected in our children. This is an area that I am extremely passionate about and want to be able to help build a supportive network of women that can go forward and support each other.
This course was everything I had hoped and so much more. Nourishment for the soul! Sally offers a space which is committed to sharing the pure joy of surfing and helping you to learn but also so importantly recognising that taking that time back when you have little ones is such an achievement in itself. I couldn't recommend the course more and I'm so pleased we now have a little group of like minded mams who just want to get in the sea escape now and again who will cheer eachother on and have a ball. Sammy
Why are these more expensive than the last ones?
Unfortunately we have not managed to secure as much funding for these sessions as previously but will be providing them at a subsidised cost. Our usual courses are £180 but these will run at £120 for five weeks.
Like in all sessions we will focus on general ocean confidence, building an understanding of the different conditions and impact of tides, winds, swell on wave formation.
Important:
Due to the very nature of unpredictable conditions we may not always have swell so will run paddle technique sessions, sea swimming, body surfing and theory on ocean safety if dangerous conditions or excessively big we also have the opportunity to run a skate session with qualified Skate GB coach, Tom Bing (Sally’s husband.) Though surfing is our focus, as a school we are strong believers that a better surfer is created when students understand the ocean. This means trying all surf crafts and learning to ‘read’ waves and weather patterns. Please be advised that the conditions will not always be perfect. These sessions are intended ‘go out whatever’ the conditions, a way of understanding our sea better which is often the reality of the North Sea. Flat sessions are recognised as important in our surf journey as it’s often during these sessions that we grasp board control and paddle techniques.
These sessions are aimed at building friendships and confidence and providing a more regular option for those not able to be as adaptable due to work/family/travel commitments. Women who have attended these sessions have formed friendships and gained skills that have helped them to become confident and independent surfers and water users.
Sally is a qualified Leven 2 ASI Instructor and SLSGB Life Guard with years of experience surfing in the North Sea, this is a great opportunity to learn to surf with a passionate and experienced instructor.
