Diary Dates!

Upcoming events for your diaries!

We are super excited to share three fantastic screenings coming to North Tyneside soon! So often has the North East been considered too far off the beaten path that these events don’t quite make it to us but here they come so let’s get together and show some support!

First up is ‘Ceibo’ A new surfing documentary that tackles gender inequality and environment protection in Ecuador. The film is an all women-led project co-directed by Cornwall based filmmaker Maddie Meddings and Australian surfer Lucy Small. Both Maddie and Lucy will be at the event; Lucy joined us last year for a sell out event at the Watchhouse and loved Tynemouth so much she is set to return.

Yonder has been asked to host a Q&A at the event and we are super excited to delve into all things Ceibo! Watch the trailer and find out more here.

This event will take place on Sunday April 27th at Three Tanners Bank. Tickets can be bought by clicking the button below.

Next up we are so excited to share that we have finally managed to secure a screening of Maya and the Wave at Tyneside Cinema. This really is an incredible piece about perseverance, injury, recovery, determination, the male gaze and sponsor pressures in the surfing world. This was a hard one to get so please do come out in force to show your support.

We will be hosting the event and have invited the lovely Louis Thomas-Hudson of Tynemouth Surf Co to join us for a Q&A. Third generation Tynemouth surfer Louis is well into his big wave Nazare campaign, navigating sponsorship, the media and the wipeouts and so we are expecting some fantastic insights that will link to the film perfectly.

I met Stephanie Johnes during the Global Wave Conference in Portugal back in 2023 and it was fantastic to hear about the process behind the making of the film and we assured her at the time that we would host this fantastic and inspiring film and share it with our community. Maya and the Wave is an awarding winning documentary following the incredible and inspirational story of big wave surfer Maya Gabeira.

Finally (and this one is now sold out) we wanted to do another huge shout out to Lewis Arnold, a local lad behind the creation of the hugely successful and vitally important ‘The Big Sea’. We are super proud that this film is set to have a great homecoming with the sold out screening at Tyneside Cinema and can’t wait to see you there!

For those of you who are not North East based it is well worth looking at your local independent cinema to see if there is a screening or any of the above, if not, request one or organise one!
