Girls Can't Surf Panel - Dr Alethea Mountford
Alethea has been blowing our minds with her progression in her skateboarding for a while now.
Skateboarding has experienced a huge shift in attitudes and participants in recent years; there are so many women who have been pioneering, breaking down barriers and the industry both from the top down, and the grassroots up has embraced the female aspect of skateboarding so well.
That doesn't mean that it isn’t a challenge to show up at a skatepark as the only woman and start from scratch.
We wanted Alethea Mountford to be on the panel as she went through the journey of starting to skateboard as an adult. As part of her journey; she ended up connecting with other women who were in the same position a herself through social media initially then in person at dedicated girls skate meets and nights. She founded the Girls Skate North East network and has been celebrating female skateboarding in the region for a few years now whilst pushing her own skating at the same time.
We were really interested to hear Alethea’s take on surfing (she surfs too) compared to her experiences as a skateboarder and also academic.
