Surfing as a Parent

There’s so much you can write for this. So many angles to come from which I am sure to cover at some point or ask others to help me cover. For now, I just thought I’d share a little insight into our world as surfing parents.

Surfing has been a huge part of our lives for so many years, having a child was never going to stop that but it’s not been easy.

For us we recognised our need to surf and continue to chase good surf, surf good spots and to do that you are at the mercy of the winds, the tides and so much more, you can’t simply say, there’s surf, I’ll go after breakfast or tonight, you need to be ready to just get up and go. There’s often only small windows within which you can grab the right conditions, where everything aligns and the reality is that doing that can be extra tough with a kid as wonderful as our little boy is.

To make sure we still chase those good days and surf the waves we have worked hard to surf over the years, it’s pretty simple, Bill must come too.

It’s a good job he’s an early riser too.

As one of us sits on the reef or sand we teach him everything about his surroundings, the rock pools, the waves coming in, the winds and tides, I can’t imagine that it’s not sinking in, we just need to make sure he doesn’t end up hating it and loves it the same way we do. Here’s a few clips of one of those days. The kind of Autumn day when the first swells are rolling in through the night and you go to sleep knowing you’ll be up and out before first light. We both surfed this day though not of course together, perhaps one day we will all surf together as a family.
