Scarborough Beginner Camp September 2019
We have had an absolutely fantastic past two camps down in Scarborough so I thought I’d take a minute to share some of the photos and provide a bit more insight into what we got up to.
The beginner camp was a huge success with great conditions, perfect weather and a really lovely group of girls from all over the UK.
Jo and Sam joined us from Newcastle, with local lass Becky coming from Robin Hood’s Bay, Kate drove up from Norfolk, Debs from Manchester and Rachel caught the train up from London. Rachel’s boyfriend is from York so it was Rachel’s chance to get a feel for the North and the East Coast to see whether it would be somewhere she could find herself living. As a Londoner born and bred it was potentially a tough task to convince her but Scarborough really turned on it’s charm, the cliffs, castle and moors providing that perfect back drop each surf session. On Sunday’s afternoon session we even got to see the infamous bottle nose dolphins that have been making their way up and down the coast from Fife to Scarborough all summer.
I’d had the pleasure of instructing four of the six girls previously, helping each of them start their surfing journey and ensuring that they were well and truly hooked. It was great to spend some more quality time with them during a camp. The camps give us time to go through surf forecasting in more detail, they allow us to to introduce the girls to inspirational surfers through short films and ensure that we can cover surf theory in more detail. The camps are really set out to introduce girls to our world of surfing and help them to become confident and independent surfers. For Debs and Rachel it was chance to try a different type of camp and coaching style and I hope that our approach and ability to focus on each individual will help them continue their surfing journey. Already Debs has joined us in Tynemouth for a free surf and signed up to the Improver camp the following month so I’m pretty positive she’s hooked.
As ever Tom was able to capture the most beautiful shots of the camp but most importantly he was present during every lesson and free surf providing invaluable feed back images. I cannot stress how important that this kind of coaching is for the girls and it never fails to entertain us all on an evening too, capturing the best wipeouts and party waves of the day. He also does a mean vege BBQ.
Every last camp we do feels like our best and I feel really lucky in that sense. We get a real sense that the girls who come to us to either learn to surf or improve come because they are passionate about surfing and really want to become independent surfers. The camps are also intended to be a great way to meet other women and hopefully make lifelong connections and feel a part of something really positive.
Thank you to everyone that joined us, what a great weekend.
