Why Ambassadors?
When I first started surfing I would look around me in the line up and it was glaringly obvious that I was the only girl. The lads I was surfing with were great, ever encouraging, supportive and the best company but I would hear about the occasional lone girl known to surf certain spots and wonder who they were. The absolute best thing about Yonder has been the push it gave me to reach out and connect with these mythical characters.
I’d heard of Emma Tweddle, I’d surfed in a little comp with her a long time and given her a shy hello. Years later when we set up Yonder I posted her a Sisters of the North Sea T-Shirt and we’ve been pretty much inseparable surf buddies since then. There is something about surfing with other women and especially women that push you, that you can look up to and be inspired by that makes you want to be better yourself and I love that.
Meeting Jen Wood was exactly the same. Jen, like Emma is a total ripper and I’m in awe of her passion and guts, she is ridiculously humble and though her Nokia 3310 phone makes her impossible to get hold of I am proud call her my friend and together with Emma our small, but hopefully growing ambassador team are people who are, what we feel to be, the true essence of female surfing.
Humble, dedicated, experienced, great role models with a voice and a passion for surfing that Yonder wants to support and share.
Emma Tweddle
Emma Tweddle has been a staple of the North Yorkshire surf community since she was a bairn. She represents so much of what we believe in at Yonder; she is a thinker, a do-er and a shredder. Always the optimist and has been there every swell for as long as I can remember.
Alethea Mountford
Alethea is the smart, hardworking, stoke sharing founder of Girls Skate North East and she represents everything we believe in at Yonder. Her medium of expression comes in the form of a skateboard; a lifestyle intrinsically linked to surfing in it’s roots.
Elle Sutherland
If you look out over the mellow lines of North Yorkshires finest log hot spot on a clean day; the chances are you will see Elle sliding across some peelers with an unmistakable smile on her face. Mother, doctor, creative, logger - these are all things that we like to celebrate here at Yonder.
Jen Wood
Jen’s living room doesn’t have sofas, it has two chairs looking out of the farmhouse window overlooking one of the most iconic views in European surfing. Jen is a midwife, a seasoned surf traveller and a respected local in Scotlands surf community. Jen is the real deal; a true representation of UK surfing.
Sally McGee
Sally McGee is a surfer, surf coach, mother and founder of Yonder. Based in the North Eastern coastal village of Tynemouth, Sally loves to spend her time surfing up and down the Yorkshire and Northumberland coastlines on single fins, logs and other varied surfboards.
